Serengeti Facts:

 

Serengeti is the oldest National Park in Tanzania

 

 

The name is derived from the Maasai word 'Siringet' which means 'an extended area'

 

 

From December to May up to two million Ungulates graze in the savannah plains

 

 

The Serengeti has the highest Ostrich population in Tanzania and possibly Africa

 

 

Records show 7.500 hyenas, 2,800 Lions, 500 species of birds in the park

Serengeti National Park covers an extensive area of 14763 sq. kms, this is Tanzania's largest national Park and undoubtedly the best known wildlife sanctuary in the world. Over three million large game animals inhabit these rolling grasslands, which the Maasai call it siringet meaning endless plains. Here one can witness the unique migration of almost 1.5 million wildebeest undertake a circuit of 1000 kms searching for new pasture from the central plains to the permanent water of the Park corridors.

About 35 species of plain animals can be observed including the 'BIG FIVE' - elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo's and large herds of wildebeest, gazelles and zebras. Do not miss the big cats on the kopjes (huge granite rocks) which dominates the plains and crocodiles at the hippo pool which is 20 kms from seronera wildlife lodge.

Established: 1951

Area: 14,763sq km

Location: Between latitudes 1o 28' and 3o 17' S and between longitudes 33o 50' and 35o 30' E

Features: Short and long grass plains in the south, the acacia savannah in the central area, the hilly more densely wooded area in the north and the extensive woodland in the western corridor

Altitude: 920m to 1,850m above sea level

Attractions: The animal migration, the grassland savannah plains, wilderness, kopjes, predators (lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, etc.), ostrich population, many bird species including migrants

Common animals: Aardvark, baboon, bat eared fox, black and white colobus monkey, buffalo, bush pig, bushbuck, civet, cheetah, dik dik, duiker, eland, elephant, genet, gerenuk, giraffe, gazelles, hartebeest, hippo, honey badger, hyrax, hyena, impala, jackal, klipspringer, kudus, leopard, lion, mongoose, oryx, oribi, reedbuck, serval cat, steenbok, squirrel, suni, topi, warthog, waterbuck, wildebeest, wild dog, vervet monkey, zebra and zorilla

Distance and time: 335km (5 - 6 hours) from Arusha

Best time to visit: December to July, to see the wildebeest migration, and June to October to see predators
