The park has had three different names; 'Ngurdoto Crater National Park', 'Meru Crater National Park' and 'Arusha National Park'

Arusha National Park is remarkable for its range of habitats - a miniature volcanic crater, highland rain forest, acacia woodlands and a string of crater lakes (The Momella Lakes). In addition, on a clear day there are spectacular views of both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. Arusha National Park offers many beautiful panoramic views. An opportunity not to be missed on your safari pictures.

Establishment: 1960

Area: 552sq km

Location: Between latitude 3o15' S and longitude 36o45' S at its centre

Features: Mount Meru, lakes, craters, forest and waterfalls

Altitude: 1524m at Momella to nearly 4565m at the summit of Meru

Attractions: Momella lakes, Ngurdoto crater, Meru crater and cone, black and white colobus monkeys, giraffes, forest and waterfalls

Common animals: More than 40 species of large mammals have been recorded including elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, warthog, black and white colobus monkey, duikers and leopard

Distance and time: 40km (1 hour) from Arusha, 130km (1 - 2 hours) from Kilimanjaro National Park

Best time to visit: October to February
